skills & experience

I have five degrees and 20 years’ experience working psychologically with people and systems. I am a front-line clinician, I have managed psychology teams, and led mental health services in the British National Health Service (NHS) and in Social Care.

My previous roles include: Strategic and Clinical Lead for Tier 4 Adolescent Inpatients, Home Treatment, and Crisis Services, Highly Specialist and Principle Psychologist, and Psychology Lead in both the NHS and Social Care.

As an experienced clinical psychologist I have comprehensive skills in clinical assessment and psychological treatment, risk management, clinical supervision, psychological consultation, reflective practice, clinical leadership, clinical effectiveness, clinical governance, teaching and training, and research and evaluation.

Having worked predominantly in specialist NHS services, I have the experience and expertise to manage and work effectively with high levels of complexity and risk, as well as with problems and populations requiring ‘specialist’ knowledge and skills. These include: complex trauma and severe dissociation, so called 'personality disorders', anorexia nervosa and other eating disorders, neurodevelopmental conditions (including autism and ADHD), looked-after young people and care-leavers, inpatients, intensive home-treatment and admission-avoidance, refugees and asylum-seekers, and forensic cases.

I trained at the Tavistock in Organisational Consultancy, gaining valuable insight and experience as well as a sophisticated skillset for understanding and working with formal and informal structures and process, above and below the surface of the organisation.

My interest in organisational psychology developed as I found myself responsible for managing organisational change and complex team dynamics within increasingly overwhelmed health and social care systems. My consultancy practice is informed by 20 years' hands-on experience of new service development; service re-design and change management; workforce recruitment, wellbeing, and retention; staff and team consultation; staff training and team development; and working with traumatised organisations and services in crisis.

In all of my endeavours - as a person, a psychologist, and a leader - I have benefited from privilege, enjoyed much success, and I have grappled with hardships and failure. On the whole, the latter has been by far the most formative: demanding humility, growth, and resilience.
